The encyclopedia of Science and Technology says 2020, Royal Dutch Shell says 2025.
A combination of things will replace it, including more mass transit and electric cars powered by coal/nuke/hydro plants. Solar, wind, tidal and geothermal will grow in use. Work will change to allow more and more "work from home".

It will never dissappear, but it will become a collectors item. It took nature 400 million years to make it. I suppose we just have to wait?

Exact estimates are hard to do, but based upon current consumption levels and recent discovery of oil wells, its estimated to be within the next 20-50 years.

What will replace petrol? We're not sure. We're still figuring cost effective ways to off-set new technology. Hybrids are a great way to test battery cells in combination with other power sources, mainly gasoline. There are concepts that use bio-diesels and others yet that use hydrogen. It just depends on what hits cheaper fastest and when it does. I'd say Hydrogen, but we don't have an infratructure like petrol/diesel so it could be a close rase between bio-diesels and hydrogen.

I doubt we will ever "run out" of oil. Currently known reserves certainly will run low sometime. But availability seems more dependent on price than anything else. If the price gets high enough, technology and politics will insure an ample supply. Since transportation is absolutely vital to the world's survival, alternative fuels such as alcohol, or alternative power sources such as electric vehicles will begin to replace oil-based fuel for all modes of transportation. An example of change is Brazil which is using enough alcohol fuel to remove its dependence on oil.

Well,no body can predict the future. (I heard on a radio show that Oil is a naturally made product and that the earth has a way of replenishing itself.........kinda goes against conventional thinking.....doesn't it?)

Looking on the horizon..I would say that Fuel Cell (Hydrogen), Electric,or Veggie Oil/Ethanol may be the next big thing (or some combination thereof)

I'd say 20-50 years, but I'm not too worried about it.

I think biomass fuels like bio-diesel and ethanol are the best alternative fuels. I don't think hydrogen is a great source of energy.

Well I don't know when we will "run out". But I know that people are starting to buy Natural Gas vehicles. My uncle has one that is a 1994 Dodge Caravan and it gets 40 - 50 mpg!
