In first, second, and third grade, nobody really cares about boys and girls. Then BOOM in fourth and fifth and on, everybody starts having major crushes, heartbreaks, and boyfriends and girlfriends. And if there is a "couple", everybody else bugs them, makes fun of them, gossip about them, or something like that. Why?

People are stupid. It is most clearly demonstrated by children, who don't know how to hide their malice with guile.

They are going through a time of change, and trying to process it. They do so like beasts, piercing each others hearts and cutting each other down. The best gift biology gives is that they suppress memories, and forget both who they were, and who others were to them, at those ages.

In reality, though those years are somewhat formative, they are awkward, and clumsy. Little real progress is made in being able to relate as a human being to human beings. Boys are taught to relate primarily to one portion of a girls body, girls are taught to relate primarily to one portion of a guys inner self, both are an auto-stimulatory behavior.

The real trick is to survive - to get through that developmental stage having most of your humanity, your soul, intact. When you are 20 you wont even be willing to process the emotions that dominated your life at that age, you refuse to admit them. You cant say "so and so broke my heart and left me crushed on the playground, and that informed my self-protective approach to relationships that followed. I never really gave myself fully after that, and so find it hard to find fulfilling relationships as an adult."

Ask a clinical psychologist and they will tell you that this is a formative age, and that hurts and wrong lessons from that time inform the rest of life, but its very rare for a breakthrough of that magnitude to occur in a patient without years of counseling.

Good luck with that.

There is a difference in boy friends and friends as boys.
When you say boy friend it becomes emotional.
When you look at boys as friends you can have good fun and nice friendships.
With girls it is the same thing.
Have fun with your friends wether boys or girls.
Plenty time when you grow up one day you will find your right man or lady when you are at the age to cope with it.
Try not to worry about people who make fun of others they are sad people.
While they are behaving this way to others it is taking the spotlight off some of their little weaknesses.
You can make a difference by ignoring the sad behaviour and being kind toward them.
An old saying "call me what you like just don't call me late for breakfast my dad taught me many years ago.
I know of a little girl who said it to a bully and he cracked up laughing he thought it was so funny and he stopped bullying her.

Have a merry Christmas.
Take care!

Most of these 4th and 5th graders have older brothers and sisters or they see this stuff on TV and they think they are supposed to have a "boyfriend" or a "girlfriend". I think it could be a growing problem actually. There isn't many shows on TV that are appropriate for that age group anymore. Or rather, that age group doesn't watch TV shows that are appropriate for them. They'd rather watch MTV.

For the same reason people have affairs at work. You put men and women(boys and girls) in the same atmosphere, they will attract, and usually less work will get done.
