Hi, I am looking to move back east and one city I'm interested in is Philadelphia. I am wondering how the job market is there, and where is the best place to live in Philly that isn't to expensive but yet safe. I am looking to rent a studio or one bedroom in northeast Philly, i have been looking at places in Bustleton, and Somerton what are these neighborhoods like?

Somerton is safer than Bustleton, but Bustleton is still safe. My brother's family live in Somerton as do many police families since it's right inside the city limits. Watch out for some of the apartment complexes as they are not always the safest. There are duplexes in the Far Northeast, farther north or perhaps East of the two you have mentioned wherein you live in a neighborhood like Parkwood. Those would be safer just make sure you see it first since it could be in need of updating, but you would be in a more family oriented place than an apartment complex.

I would also recommend looking for housing in the Manayunk/Roxborough areas. Philadelphia is a great city and you should not be detered to move here by stereotypes. It takes some time to get used to but it's a great city. I'm actually moving back to Philly this summer after 6 years of being away. Good Luck!

I live in Bustleton. I lived here all of my life. If you have small kids you have 3 very good elementary schools. You are near the malls, I-95, route 1. Your in between regional rail stations (if you need to take the train). The buses run everywhere. I live in a nice neighborhood and my neighbors are friendly. I would highly recommend moving here. As far as the job market, not sure what you are looking for but if you go on Monster.com, you will see plenty of jobs in Philly.

Actually, I like Philly. It is still the most affordable large city on the east coast in my opinion. As far as living in NE Philly, why not try someplace else, like Chestnut Hill, a more pleasant area that isn't so much like Queens.

You might also look into Mayfair... that isn't too bad.

At the risk of being morbid, here is a link to a VERY informative , interactive map of Philadelphia that shows where all of the murders have taken place between January-November 2005:
http://inquirer.philly.com/graphics/murders_map/

It'll definitely give you an idea of which areas are NOT having a drug problem (since majority of murders in Philly are drug-related).
