I'm starting a music blog, and I'm hoping for mild success. What would help me achieve that goal?

You have to offer something that is in demand, that people 'need' or 'want' to know, be brief and to the point and avoid having a TEXT ONLY blog, people like images. Choose your content and images wisely and pick a subject.

You want to keep your site updated as much as possible, even a single entry per day will keep them coming back for more.

#3 News
If you offer news about an upcoming event or product people will most likely go back there to keep themselves informed.

#4 Interaction
Keep up with questions and comments from your visitors, also it is important to maintain a good communication with your 'audience'.
