Isreal is a country of Jews, Muslims, Christians, Circassians, Druze, and followers of nearly every other religion.

The Christians in Israel, as all other citizens, have full freedom of religion. Churches flourish and Christmas ornaments are on sale in all cities.

Bethlehem is not in Israel, but rather is part of the Palestinian Authority. What is happening in Bethlehem this year?

The following facts were reported:

- In 1967, there were 5 mosques, in 2004 there were 84

- In 1950, Christians were 75% of the population, they are now 12%

- The average age of the Moslem population is 16, that of the Christians - 36

- In the 2005 municipal elections, Hamas won 12 out of 15 seats

- According to Palestinian Authority law, the mayor of Bethlehem must be Christian. His faction has one member only on the council.

They dont celebrate christmas but they do have a festival at this time of year. It's called hunnekah or something.
