My son has it right now. His eye is not red but it gets crusty and stuck together. I put prescription drops. I was also told to wipe it with my breast milk. Breast milk is sterile so I figured it won't hurt. Also, make sure to massage the corners of the eyes. I'm including a link to a web site that describes how to do it and provides you with other info.

A blocked tear duct is a very common occurrence in babies. Usually by 9 months of age this goes away. If it does not go away by that age then you should see an eye doctor who will open it for you surgically, this is a very quick procedure. All you can do until then is to apply warm compresses to the eye a few times a day. The eye will look as if it has a yellowish discharge coming from the corner of the eye. If the babies eye appears red and swollen then this could mean there is an infection and the doctor should see the baby immediately

red and puffy near the corner of the eye and possibly crusting. Carefully massaging the skin near the corner of the eye next to the nose.

Putting gentle, upward pressure on this area repeatedly throughout the day may help pop open the membrane, leaving the duct clear. Sometimes lukewarm compresses can also help.

Until the duct opens fully, you'll need to regularly clean the discharge from your baby's eyes. Dip a cotton ball in saline solution (which you can buy at the drugstore) and gently wipe the eye from the inside corner out. Use a fresh cotton ball for every wipe.

If a duct remains clogged after age 6 months, your doctor may suggest a simple outpatient surgery to clear it, or she may suggest that you wait until your baby is at least a year old. Once a duct has opened — by itself or with help — it should remain open and not cause any more trouble.

Our son had a blocked tear duct for 9 months. The doc had us self-treating, but rubbing the wrong spot.

She referred us to a surgeon who said it is barbaric to do this surgery on kids. The surgeon also showed us the proper spot to rub and the tear duct was unblocked quickly.

Basically, massage gently down the side of your baby's nose. The pediatrician didn't have us going far enough down to unblock. Check with a book showing a diagram of the location of tear ducts in a baby's face and you can be sure you are rubbing the right place.

My son had a blocked tear duct for the first 4 months of his life..it looked like a little bit of yellowish puss in the corner of his eye that always had to be wiped. The doctor said it would clear up on it's own and if it did not, there was minor surgery they could do at 1year old. It looks gross, but is really no big deal.

My daughter had two blocked tear ducts till she was 6 months old. Her eyes weren't red but she had white and yellowish discharge in the corner of her eyes. The doctor told me to take a warm damp cotton ball or wash cloth and massage the inside corner of her eyes 2 to 3 times a day. That seemed to do the trick. Good Luck!

Most babies get a blocked tear duct.. The eye will look infected, red and bloodshot... It will most likely stick together while the baby is sleeping, kind of a yellowish/greenish discharge from the eye...If it is a blocked tear duct then there is nothing really to do for it. Hold a warm washcloth over the eye to unstick it Just make sure it is not an infection before you leave it untreated.
