Always. Whenever there is blood involved they do it. Plus they check for HIV, Hep C, and other diseases.

Usually before and after birth they will take blood from you to test. HIV and Hep C are usually tested when you go to your doc for your prenatal visits. My son stuck his fist in a nurses mouth right after delivery (This nurse was in training and by the time we left the hospital I asked that she not be allowed near my son - she was scary!!) before he was cleaned up. They couldnt find my HIV test so I had to authorize them to do another HIV test.

Yes.
They will usually take blood when you are admitted and again when you check out.
They will also take some of baby's blood before you check out. (But if you leave prior to 48 hours, decline it as the test on baby's blood won't be accurate earlier than then. Come back after baby is 48 hours old or have your ped do it.)

While working on L/D we took it upon admission (so we had a base reading) then 24 hours post partum, just so they could be compared and make sure you're healing properly.
