Sprinkle WHOLE, not ground, cloves where you have silverfish. Apparently, they do not like the scent and will leave you (and your belongings) alone.
Boric Acid
It is cheap & it lasts as long as it does not get damp. It is a powder that can be poured into cracks, dusted under sinks, and blown under the stove & refrigerator. You can buy it at most hardware stores. Just buy a plastic picnic ketchup/mustard bottle with a pointed top that closes. This works best for getting it into the tight places that it needs to go. If the powder gets damp, just reapply. It will take a few weeks for all of the bugs to die, but you probably won't see them again. The powder sticks to their legs and then they drag it back into their nests where it kills others as well.
Newspapers?
One trick that help me was to moisten a newspaper (so that it was damp but not soaking) roll up the newspaper and tie it with an elastic. Do this at night and the next morning slowly open up the newspaper (it should be full of silverfish) next either burn the newspaper or empty into a garbage can outside the house. Do this every night until the newspaper no longer has any silverfish in it.
Close Your Drains
Keep your drains closed when they are not in use.

Try sprinkling regular table salt around your baseboards and all drain pipes and other cracks and crevices. Besides being cheap, salt is not as harmful as other pesticides to children and pets if they should come into contact with it. Of course you will need to repeat this from time to time.
If you have children in the house, its not advisable to use Boric Acid.

A 1:1-ratio dispersion of borax or Boric acid and sugar is a reliable bait to kill silverfish (relatively non-toxic to non-insects).
The scent of a sal ammoniac solution should drive away silverfish within 24 hours.
To capture silverfish, sprinkle plaster on a wet, white cotton cloth, put it in a corner overnight, near the silverfish's hideout. Or trap in small glass containers -- silverfish cannot climb up the smooth inside walls.
Adults can be killed by freezing, but it is difficult to kill the eggs.
By far the most effective way to be rid of Silverfish for sure is to keep an area or room tidy, limiting the possible number of breeding grounds they have.

Silverfish are from an ancient order of insects that pre-date the dinosaurs by many tens of millions of years, they are found in some of the most hostile enviroments on earth and can survive extreme damp and dryness. The nymphs are unable to breed so it is the adults you need to concentrate on, hoovering them up is the best solution in the long term, mothballs (napther) are the best short term solution, place them where you see the silverfish and push them into any cracks you think they may be coming in through.
The main thing is to tackle them in the long term as they will return if you leave any, on the upside they are not know to carry any disease and were held to be a sign of good luck or prosperity if they were seen in your hearth.

They do get in most old houses but I understand that they don't do any harm. They would be very hard to get rid of as they are a very primitive insect and have been around several millions of years.
