i took a media course this past semester as part of the communications program. now i'm switching back to business in the spring. i'm probably going to fail this media class. will it affect my GPA being that it has nothing to do with my business program? i can't use it as an elective or gen ed or anything.

All classes count as part of your GPA unless they allow a Pass/Fail option. However, when you go out and interview for jobs they might ask you for your overall GPA and major GPA. Lots of people try things they're not good at, then switch, so overall GPA doesn't hurt so bad if you have a good GPA in whatever you end up majoring in.

First, yes, this grade will be a part of your cumulative GPA. But if you have done well in everything else, it's surprising how little one bad class will hurt you. Also, if you are thinking of applying to graduate school or looking for a job, I would strongly urge you to do something along the lines of what someone above suggested. You could stress in your letter of application what your GPA in your major is, or what your GPA after the end of your sophomore year is. It's OK to put yourself in a good light as long as you make clear to whomever you are communicating with that this is exactly what you are doing.

You say you "can't use it as an elective or gen ed or anything." However, credits are credits. Your school undoubtedly requires you to earn a total number of credits to graduate. The credits you earn in this class would at least count toward that total number.

The answer is YES, it will impact your GPA. Any class you take at the school where you'll be getting your degree is included in your overall GPA. This is why you want to do your best in all classes, not just the ones in your major!

Yes, it will affect your GPA. Every class you take affects your GPA as an undergrad, no matter what your major is.
