I am a new mom, my newborn is now 3 wks old. She makes a tremendous amount of noise while she is sleeping at night. She grunts, snorts, cries (in her sleep) and makes a straining noise as if she is using the bathroom (but she has no trouble doing this) The pediatrician said this was normal. Has anyone had a baby that does this? She makes these sounds constantly, like every couple of minutes while sleeping. Also, any suggestions on changing her sleep pattern from sleeping in the day to the night? Also she hates to be put down and cries often. Any suggestions on how to break her from this habit. When would be a good time to add cereal to her breastmilk? I am breastfeeding. Does anyone know of any foods from their experience that may be setting her off that I should not eat. I don't eat any spicy food or foods that would cause gas such as beans or brocolli. I do eat salads and drink herbal tea a lot. I switched from regular milk to soy. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

As far as trying to switch her sleep pattern, you should try placing her on a schedule. Like feeding every three hours during the day starting at 5 or 6 and letting her nap and have a little play time. Make sure you don't let her sleep more than 1 1/2 hours at a time during the day. This should help after no longer than a week. She may still wake up during the night to feed especially since she is breastfeeding. But, the longer you have her on a set schedule the more she will become accostomed to it. I hope this is helpful.

As far what you are eating that may be affecting her do you eat onions? Or maybe garlic? Just a suggestion. You just never know, you just have to try different combinations and see what works. Also she may have gas, for that you can try giving her mylacon drops. They are baby safe and work like a dream.

It's totally normal for baby to make all that noise during sleep. Just be sure not to run an pick her up at every squeak. Wait til she wakes up (usually crying) to pick her up or you risk waking a sleeping baby!

It is also perfectly normal for babies to strain a great deal while passing gas or bowel movements. This doesn't mean baby is costipated (esp since breastfed babies don't get constipated.)

Both my babies were noisy sleepers in infantcy. And although my 3 year old wasn't a grunter when passing gas or BM my 5 week old is VERY loud while doing it.

As for changing her sleep pettern don't let her nap too much during the day, especially during the evening (after 4 pm) Keep her awake by giving her a bath, taking a walk outside, playing with her, changing her diaper, if all else fails with my son I would strip him down to his diaper and use a cold wipe ob his face, arms, belly and legs. He got his days and night figured out after about 3 days of that!

Also while she's awake during the day, interact with her and stimulate her, and when she's awake at night, keep the lights dim and and stimulation to a minimum.

As for hating to be put down, I totally understand! My 1st baby was totally laid back and a very easy baby. This one however is very high needs! Has to be held constantly! Invest in a baby carrier of some sort. A sling is great. Or make your own (don't worry, doesn't require sewing! LOL) http://www.wearyourbaby.com/ I have a sling ($30 at walmart) a carrier ($20 at Walmart) and my own h0omemade wrap ($5 for fabric made 3 differnt sizes of fabric to do differnt carries) The easiest carry I first learned is here http://www.wearyourbaby.com/Default.aspx?tabid=180

Do NOT let people tell you you are spoiling her and to let her Cry it out (CIO) I am all in favor of the CIO method, I Ferberized my 1st son (Google Ferber Method to learn more) But yous houldn't let baby CIO until age 6 months. They simply don't posses the ability to self soothe until that age.

Don't start cereal, don't add it to breastmilk. Babies don't have digestive enzymes needed to digest solids until at least 6 months. AND babies need nothing but breastmilk for the 1st 6 months and it should continue to be the main source of nurishment until age 1. I would suggest doing the baby led approch http://www.borstvoeding.com/voedselintroductie/vast_voedsel/rapley_guidelines.html this method also saves lots of money by not buying that over priced jarred baby food--baby starts out eating straight from the table.

And new studies show that what the mother eats has little effect on baby. Other cultures eat spicy foods at each meal and have happy healthy breastfed babies. Switch back to cow's milk if you prefer it, it's very rare for babies to be allergic to cow's milk in the mothers diet.

HTH and congrats on your bundle of joy!

My little girl did this to when she was a newborn. I was worried to. So was my husband, our doctor said it was normal to. She is now 10 weeks and does not grunt and make those noises anymore. I think it went away when she was six weeks old. She used to do it when she woke up to something terrible. But that to went away about 2 weeks ago. Its scary at first but once you realize that your baby is fine and nothing is wrong its actually kind of cute. My doctor said if it really bothered us we could try to prop her crib up at one end so she sleeps on an incline. But I think that was more for my baby having reflux. Don't worry your baby is fine.

My Grandson makes all kinds of noises when he sleeps and he is 3 weeks old to. He to, has his days and nights mixed up. It will take time for them to adjust to our routine. I have nick named my Grandson Squeakers. And the reason she doesn't want put down, in my opinion, is she wants more cuddle time with you. My Grandson also does this. Remember, she was in you womb for 40 weeks and got used to hearing your heart beat. As for the cereal, this I don't know about either, the same for what you are eating. If you're receiving W.I.C. ask them, if not ask your baby's doctor.

my niece does the same thing. poor thing grunts and groans all night long. her doc said it was normal also. as far as the sleep pattern goes i would just give her a little more time to get adjusted. poor thing has had to adjust to so much in three weeks. i'm sure she just needs some time to get on track. my son was the same way for awhile. he still doesn't sleep all night but he finally figured out to do most of his sleeping at night. i didn't breastfeed so i can't help you with that. just relax and give her some time. best of luck
