I use a Twinhan PCI card to receive satellite TV on my PC. I use ProgDVB to watch the 4:2:2 stuff and PBS HD, and MyTheatre for everything else. MyTheatre will do 4:2:2 but it comes up small on my screen and I have to manually change the graph to the right codec for 4:2:2. MyTheatre does HD as well but its a bit more of a resource hog than ProgDVB, however MyTheatre is MUCH more user friendly than ProgDVB, and it supports USALS without any special plugins. People talk about RitzDVB as well but I haven't used it.

I have a FTA STB as well. It's a Pansat 330A and it works great. However, what I like about the PC card is that it I can watch 4:2:2 programming and HD, where the Pansat will not do either. If you don't have any 4:2:2 or HD channels wherever you are, then I suppose it doesn't make a difference. Also, I can use the PC as a PVR; instantly pause and rewind live TV, record things in the exact same quality they're broadcast in and burn them to DVD's or VCD's. I don't think there are any boxes that will let you burn CD's and DVD's but a FTA PVR will run you a couple hundred £££ and one that does HD and 4:2:2 as well? Several hundred £££!! I got my card brand new on eBay for £30.

Satellite TV is just digital TV broadcast on a different frequency from the terrestrial UHF system, and with better encryption so they can charge for it.. However there are more than 3000 Free To Air channels available to any one with the right receiver.
PC digital is half a solution. For £70-80 youy can buy a FTA receiver (Maplin) which is far superior to anything available for your PC.

If you like analogue, I've got a Chapparal Monterey 20 (Cost £800) you can have for £50, or a Phillips Visiopass D2 MAC receiver/decoder.
