Originally no un-necessary work was done during the time the log burned.

The yule log has its origins in Norse pagan traditions, and was part of the winter solstice celebrations.

Originally for part of the festivities to bring luck to the coming year, a large log would be found, often the largest that could be found and brought to the communitiy for the festival.

However it is not just Scandinavian tradition, it is thought to go as far west as Ireland, and as far as Greece. The more modern smaller yule logs came when large fireplaces were replaced with stoves.

It wasn't until aproximately the fourth century AD that it was incorporated into Christian traditions.

Yule log:
1) A long-burning log with decorations on it that is a symbol of the continuance of light
2) A terrific dessert made of ice cream and cake, covered with merangue and lit on fire a flambe.

Actually no, we don't have a lot of fires here in Phoenix and I think that dessert is too complicated for me... I'll stick to trifle.
