First off, they were not "wise men." They were astrologers or Magi. Both of which are CONDEMNED in the Bible. Why were they looking for Jesus? Because a sign of a Royal Birth was in the stars for the Jews. They wanted to find and honor this new Prince whose birth was so important that the stars recorded it. However, that was the trap. By exposing Christs birth to the stars, Satan set up Jesus' execution, he hoped. By leading the Magi to him with the star leading the way (yes, it was taking them to him, not actually in the Heavens) then they would also take Herod's men to the Child and get him killed. However, they were wise enough to realize this at the last minute and keep Herod away, giving Joseph and Mary time to escape to Egypt. So, while they were good intentioned, they almost got Christ Jesus killed.
