Often, I see people use the Soviet Union as an example of how communism failed. That was totalitarianism. You must understand the true theory. Marx wrote that in the true model, the state fades away. In the purest form, small communes are what it is about. And out of necessity, humans may have to resort to that in the future. It isn't over.

In the truest sense of the theory, communism has never been practiced or been given a shot ANYWHERE in the world.

;You are right. People used it to take control of the state. It was not what Marx was saying. He was talking about how capitalism will cave in on itself because it dehumanizes people.
Germany in 1930: capitalist facist
Russia: dictatorship
There was a group of persons that practiced his theory, tribal people, american indidans. Capitalism: makes factory workers feel like machines, dehumanizes the worker and employer (due to greed), pollutes and destroys the earth, causes all war due to money and profits, kills people (pollution), and has been nothing but a big thorn in the World' side.
People are also made afraid of Marx because of propaganda against his theory and it's relation to Russia and China. Hitler was good at the propaganda against them and then the USA hired his thugs to demonize it in the USA to get the people to battle it. Obviously it's not working.

A lot of people do understand the utopian THEORY--but Marx was so totally wrong. Political systems have to work in real life, not just the imagination of their creator. Marx's errors were demonstrated by history. One would have to be willfully naive to miss what happened when communism failed. The only way for communism to work is by way of totalitarianism. People cannot be politically free and not economically free. It is not possible for the state to fade away and the system still be communist. The Soviet Union demonstrated beautifully what you get when the market does not get information on what to produce and how much (prices), people don't have incentives, and people are not free to choose their occupation. Inevitable disaster.
Now, if you want to talk about a confessional community, there is a possibility that could be successful, but precisely because it is religious and not atheist as Marx called for. 'Religion is the opiate of the masses' is one of the most misguided statements Marx made. People would have to voluntarily sacrifice for the community. The key word there is voluntarily.

No, I understand the difference between Soviet Union communism and Marxism. Neither works. Marx had a Utopian vision, but it negated the spirit of man. And mankind. You are right about one thing. True communism has never been practiced. That's a good thing. Because it would revert to some type of government, and that government would have to become totalitarian to preserve societal order. Back to the version we saw in the Soviet Union. It is inevitable.
I don't doubt your intentions, but they seem naive. In order for true communism to work, everyone would have to be of the same mind. Sooner or later, some form of societal code would have to established. Which would have to require a governmental influence. And of course some of the skilled workers would reject the notion that they should provide services for the same benefits that the unskilled worker would receive. And then skilled workers would refuse to provide services without greater benefits. More need for governmental influence.
Remember the same mindset, well it just doesn't work.

Marx never imagined the Internet, Microsoft, WalMart, the Airline industry, Satellite communications, or Interstate Freeway systems. These things are here to stay; and Marxism could not provide the opportunities that give meaning to the lives of a billion people.
A Capitalistic economy with an Entitlements system THAT REALLY WORKS is currently better in theory, because it allows no limit on personal income thus leaving the incentive to work for a better life in the hands of companies and individuals alike.

I concur. Communism is meant to be good and inherently is. I feel the only way it could work though is if it was globalized. Absolute power corrupts absolutely though.
It has always been my understanding that Communism = Dictatorship. I may be wrong and fell for the propaganda from our side of the pond.

to keep the serfs working you have to make them believe communism is bad, the people in control do not want a revolution, that is also why we do not trade with cuba, we can not allow an economically successful communist state to exist a short distance off the coast of flordia, the lower classes might start getting ideas
