Apple macs are great - no viruses, don't slow down like Windows does after a while. All means you won't need that customer support ;-)

If you're expect that you'll break a lot of bits and need to use the warranty a lot, go with a Dell. They have great support and can covere you for 3 years at a decent cost. Sure, they use cheap components and the build quality isn't very good - but you've got the support!

Almost any laptop on the market will do what you want to. HP has a warranty and good customer service. As far as a phone line, you will need either a phone line for dial-up or dsl unless you can get cable dsl.

I really like HP's but Dells are cheaper and aren't any worse. Don't get a Mac that's for sure. Expensive && a pain. Get about 512MB && 80GB. That's the memory. Also check out Toshiba. Windows XP Home Edition is the best for you, I think.
