Definition: Nerves are sensory cells that line the body. They allow you to feel and sense heat, the cold, or if an object is soft or hard. Without nerves, you would not be able to know if someone is poking you.

I suggest a picture showing the human spinal cord, that spreads out, forming the nervous system.
