I want to go to UC San Diego and I do not know if it is cheaper to live on off campus. Can anybody tell me? The cheapest rent for off campus is a 1 bedroom for $800 and I do not understand the prices for the dorm!

Live off campus and get a room mate. Actually, even without the room mate, it might still be cheaper. If you have a car and can drive, you would be surprised that just a few yards away, there is a whole new (cheaper) world of renting space. You don't have to live right across the campus.

First of all, you don't say "more cheaper!"

If you can find a roomate, living off campus in walking distance of the college is always cheaper than campus life. Living on campus, the meal plan is usually expensive with bad food. You can get fined if some guy down the hall pulls the fire alarm 10 times in a week.

You do get room with furniture when you live on campus, but most places are so expensive that in two years of living off campus, you can buy your own bunk beds and have pizza every other day for the price that you would pay for living on campus.

If you are starting in the fall, do some research over the summer. If you can't find what you want, live on campus for a year and you'll see what you like better.

i recommend on campus for a freshman even though it is more expensive. because if you are off campus you have extra headaches - like going to the grocery store, doing all your cooking, finding a roomate, dealing with roommates who don't pay their bills or make a big mess or make too much noise, etc.
it also depends...if you don't have a car you will need to live close or on the bus line. and the grocery store can be a problem.
i recommend living on campus the first year and you can check out apartments, roommates and stuff that first year and move if you find a better arrangement. you have enough to worry about your first year of college without worrying about living off campus.
