civilization, good vs evil, what drives others to follow other despite their misgivings, how innocence can be corrupted even in children, basically some really depressing stuff

I can't really attest to what he was thinking, but as far as the book goes, I imagine he was attempting to convey the fact that no matter how we clothe ourselves in the illusion of 'society' and civilization, we are still at our cores, animals -- behavioristically. If there is no 'big brother' set up to provide us with the strict guidelines of how to behave, he thinks we will revert back to our true natures.

Well, since Survivor is pretty much just ripped off this idea, he was way ahead of his time. He wanted to show just what even people of privilege would resort to if confronted with a survival situation.

Probably the savage human nature of mankind. Humans will attack each other just like "animals" do, even though we consider ourselves modern and civilized. We have wars all the time, and to settle our conflicts we bomb/shoot each other. It is no coincidence how the book ends, and what is mentioned. In case you haven't finished it I won't say it here.

Golding was thinking that little boys are horrific little savages unless forced to become civilized.

I think he was pretty much crazy and amused himself by writing sick and twisted books that he thought were 'deep'. not much of an author in my eyes.
