The Field Museum currently has a King Tut exhibit, but you have to buy tickets in advance. Also, while it has a lot of cool pieces, it does not have the Death Mask that is so famous.
Field is also closer to other attractions (Art Institute, Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium, Grant Park, Millennium Park and Michigan Ave) where as Science and Industry is sort of close to the University of Chicago, but not much else.
Still Science and Industry is a much more entertaining museum.

The Field Museum has the dinosaur Sue. It has a few other things but the real excitement will be at the MOSI. For the youngsters there are some cool things to do. The coal mine is ok but they have a 727 plane in the building and a boat load of other things. They do have some sort of musuem pass where if you buy them all together you might save money. If you do a search for chicago tourism they might have more info.

The Museum of Science and Industry. It's a bit off the beaten trail from the rest of Chicago, but it's a more entertaining museum for teenagers. Also, the nearby neighborhood around the University of Chicago, particularly the restaurants along 57th Street, and the amazing view of the city from Promontory Point, at 55th Street along Lake Michigan, are well worth seeking out.

MSI. Cools stuff to look at. Lots of electronic stuff for the kids to push, turn on, mess around with. It also has an Imax theater there showing some kind of movie, a coal mine, a German sub you can walk through, etc. You could spend two whole days there and probably not see everything. Not to knock the Field Museum, but the MSI is more interactive.

The Chicago Historical Society is a third choice. Since the visitors are older, they may rather enjoy some of the stories, artifacts and events about Chicago. The place has been recently rehabbed and has a name change...Chicago History Museum. Check the webstite below:

MSI hands down. The Field is a nice enough museum but if you don't want to pay extra all you can really do is look at fossils and other outdated exhibits about gems and early man.

MSI has stuff that costs extra (Omnimax, 3-D theatre, Inside the U-Boat tour) but there is still lots of interesting stuff to do if you don't want to pay beyond the admission price.

MSI - There are a significant amount of interactive exhibits, plus exhibits for fans of varying types. One I can name off-hand is a full-scale replica of a steam locomotive. Great for railfans, I am one.
