You need a wired or wireless router in order to connect on the net same time or not.
If you don't want to purchase a router you can setup a hub but each PC needs to have the exact internet settings in order to connect to the net and can't be online on the same time.
So save yourself time & worries get yourself a router.
Router requirement : DSL or CAble or Fiber optic connections.
Joe.

To connect to the internet you need a signal. This can be dial-up, dsl, or broadband. Broadband is the fastest connection, and is usually offered by your local cable company. So to connect to the internet with two computers you need a modem, a router, and a wireless card. Most modems now a days come with a router built in. The modem box would plug into the ethernet or usb port on your pc. Then the router would send the same signal to your laptop(usually anywhere within 250 ft). Your laptop would recieve the signal from the router through a wireless card, this can be an ethernet card too. As I said this works best with a high speed broadband connection.

best solution is hardware - to get a wired or a wireless router (either will work, wired is faster, but wireless is usually more convenient - just remember if wired you will need NIC cards for both laptop and pc, and wireless adapter for pc and laptop if going for the wireless router. Router comes in all shapes and sizes nowadays so you can also get routers that are a hybrid - wireless with a few wired ports available). just remember if you get a router you need an adsl one for adsl broadband/e.g ones that plug into your phone line, or a normal /cable router for others e.g. ntl/cable broadband.
The other route is software based. You run a software solution on the pc and wire the laptop the the pc via NICs/wireless. For the software solution you have to run something similar to the free ICS (internet connection) service on windows, or run a proxy server. Theres a lot of free and commercial software to do this (dont use ICS service -its a bag of sh**t to run), running a proxy is better than ICS. Dont even think about sharing modem, even on 56k modem I had a dedicated workstation running a proxy and it sank to the ground when two people or more used the internet simultaneously.
For you i would recommend getting a router - it would be easier to set up (most of them are unmanaged - plug and play with web interface to configure them). Running a proxy is an overkill for just two workstations, but then if its money thats holding you back, ICS/proxy might be the way to go.

depends on how your desktop is connected to the internet. If it's using a modem then you can share that by using a cross-over ethernet cable between the desktop and laptop (see other answer about the Help pages) or get yourself a router and connect both to that.

If you don't want to purchase a router (best method), you can create a workgroup network using an inexpensive crossover cable, once you have a small network, ie. your 2 computers you can then use internet connection sharing on the desktop pc to give access to the laptop.
Personally I would get a router.

Hi. A simple 4-way router would be enough kit, or you can buy a wireless router if preferred. Everything else is a matter of settings.
Don't try to split or double cables though,it isn't worth the effort.
Cheers, Steve.

Use the same router, but if you use a router both must be wireless you could also use a modem and connect both together.

I have a router and just hook both computers up via ethernet. Doesn't really slow either one down.
