If they haven't been exposed to hispanics or haven't had a relationship/friendship with one they develop a slight ignorance towards the fact that all hispanics are different. Just like Asians. Its so funny, but rude to call a Japanese, Chinese or an Indian, a Pakistan and vica versa. There are so many examples but to make the point short, it's all about not being acquainted with different cultures and acknowledging where they come from(in a geographical sense).

Because most hispanics are dark skinned like Mexicans. It's like seeing a Laotian, and calling them Chinese, or Japanese. Most people don't even know about Laos, so they pick the country they know about. If an hispanic is from Ecuador, people will say they are Mexicans, because most people don't even know Ecuador exists, but they are familiar with Mexico. Hispanic is not a race, its an ethnicity, but I think people do not want to go around asking each hispanic what country they are from.

Because of the immigration problems the US has recently been having, the word "mexicans" has been used more frequently than usual.

So when someone sees a hispanic, they often think "border-jumper," even though this is not usually the case.

Cause those people who categorize all Hispanics as Mexicans are IGNORANTS.
Hispanic means that you speak spanish, Not that you are Spanish or Mexican. Is as if we were saying that all those who speak english are English
