Many disfunctional relationships are relatively stable long-term. It's called "co-dependancy". Each party has a neurosis, or psychological issue that is unhealthy or disabling. They match with another who's issue feeds theirs. The "altruistic" wife feeds the husband's need to have his ego stroked, and the egoistic husband feeds her need to feel needed, or nurturing. It will survive until one or the other realizes their issue is unhealthy, and begins to change. Since the marriage is built on co-dependancy, and one is no longer dependant... if the other does not grow also, then from that point on the relationship is doomed.

I had to run see if hubby was on Q & A. Your question describes us. We are deeply devoted to each other; somehow our different personalities seem to help us grow in patience and tolerance. Our worldly views are different, but how the way we treat each other and want to be treated seems to match. We focus our energy on us first, and then the rest of the world.

Peace :)
