Pointe shoes are the shoes worn by female ballet dancers (and on a rare occasion, the males). The platform/box is the part which supports you and you stand on. Shank is on the sole and it creates the dancers arch.

Pointe shoes give the appearance of floating or being weightless. It makes the dancer very elegant and not like a romping animal dancing across the stage :)
