so cost before tax=2288*100/104
=$2200
tax=2288-2200
=$88

Easy, I think:

Total cost =$2,288
Rate = 4%

For cost: $2,288 / 1.04 = $2200
Tax = $2288 - $2200 = $88.

cost + 4*cost/100 = total cost
cost(1.04) = total cost
cost = (total cost)/1.04
cost = $2,288/1.04
cost = $2,200
