Marketing is the way a couple positions itself in business. Marketing helps decide which direction it should go in the market place and helps "brand" the company as well as identify the future customers. Many a company have failed because of having no marketing plan or an ineffective one.

The marketing channel system is what allows an organization to aggregate their target market into profitable demographic on a more personal level. Properly utilizing channel management through search engine optimization can make or break the company. If used right you can properly command a stronger price difference as well as build brand equity. It's what separates the market movers from the other businesses.

Marketing is actually quite simply defined -- it's the way you get a message to people, about how you portray your product (example: candy or shoes) or service (lawyer for hire).
That can be done many, many ways from paying for placement of a created message (tv, radio, print, online, website), and/or a number of other ways from mailing directly to homes/businesses, or using the media to use your company name "as news" and a feature-story, without actually paying for it. For example, Hillary's campaign emailing a "news release" that they received $10mil in donations today, is run as if it's news and benefits Hillary, because people & even more media, see her "as vital". Or, that Pepsi or some cola, is moving away from using high-fructose corn syrup as a sweetener (and thus making mothers/buyers believe it's more healthy, which it actually isn't). That's public relations, and all you pay for are the professional behind-the-scenes that know how to get that done. Then, there's events like a local bake-sale at a local CVS -- making people believe its part of the community, and thus go-there and shop. There's no limit to marketing, except your imagination -- and the MONEY needed, or not to get your message to the right people.
You're not going to get a marketing professional to sit here and type forever -- on what you're asking for (..evolution of Marketing? come on) since each phrase listed is a text book in itself. GL in whatever assignment you've been given to ask such a clinical question.

From a societal point of view, marketing is the link between a society's material requirements and its economic patterns of response. Marketing satisfies these needs and wants through exchange processes and building long-term relationships.
