im building my own computer from a barebones kit from tiger direct, and the two im deciding on have those cpus with them... im not sure which to get. I went to toms hardware and did a comparison, and the 3700+ was only an average of 6 seconds slower than the 4000+

Depends on what you are doing. If you are playing little games I suggest the AMD with 2 Gigs. But if you are just opening alot of programs I suggest the one with 4 Gigs. But overall I would pick the AMD with 4 gigs because you could open more programs and is faster. The processor also depends on speed but mainly on graphics.

I would really consider the new Intel Core 2 duo. It is far superior to the AMD chips now and has a lead that will take AMD a while to claw back. The core 2 duos start at about £100 ($200) and the mid range chips beat the top of the range AMD chips in most tests. Toms hardware will be able to confirm what i have just said.

That said ... if i had to choose from the choices you posted above, i would go for the 4000+ and 2 GB. 2 GB of ram should be enough for most applications.

Also, unless you are using VISTA, Linux or XP 64, you may have real problems getting the computer to recognise all 4 GB as windows XP home/pro will only recognise 2GB max without really messing about.

Hope that helps.

Isn't a 3700 and a 4000 pretty close in speed?

If so, I would take the 4 gig -- that sounds kick***.

umm take the 4000 with the 2 gig of ram, ram is cheep and you can always up-grade plus what you want to realy look for is processor speed and ram can only do so much for to an extent

faster proc with 2gb or ram, even though im not a fan of AMD. 4gb of ram is a bit overkill if you ask me for the meantime and honestly the slower puter is maxed out in terms of clockspeed and as far as memory wise....if you MUST have 4gb of memory you can always upgrade in the future.....

personally i cant imagine needing 4gb(unless your doing 3d animation/photoshop) thats just insane put that money towards a bigger monitor or a comfy chair, dvd writer or nice keyboard/mouse kit....

Double the memory will make a much bigger difference than having an 8% faster CPU.
