I have a 2005 Nissan Sentra with about 11,000 miles on it which has started to rattle noisily when the brakes are engaged. The problem does not occur every time I put the brakes on and it ranges from a subtle rattle to a loud (and quite embarrasing) pounding like there is a jackhammer under my hood. What could cause this?

I would say a faulty Caliper Piston(s) which are not engaging and disengaging correctly and this would cause pre-mature & uneven wearing on your brake pads which would then cause&start to warp your rotor and possibly crack your rotor. Or it can even be a loose Caliper or pads.

If it is still under bumper to bumper warranty take it to the dealer. I believe some warranty's will only cover the brakes to 20,000 miles as it is common wear item on vehicles. However, if you are pretty handy taking apart and replacing the calipers, pads and rotors are very easy to do and would be cheaper than paying some brake shop or dealer to replace.

Also, check your ball joints as well if there is some rattling with out engaging the brakes.

probably your rotors are warped.

sounds like you don't drive much. 11000 miles isn't a lot for a 2005.

these rotors are shot and i'm betting they're rusted. if you don't use the car for a while, the rotors will start to rust. what i do if we've had a lot of rain or i' haven't used teh car is i'll apply the brakes really hard. that cleans the rotors using the brake pads and keeps them lasting longer especially if you aren't driving the car every day

You had better take your car into a "brake" place, and there are tons, and have them checked out. I don't think you have any "pads" left, and when you are applying the brakes, they are "rubbing" against the "cylinders", if that is the case you are really damaging your brakes, and will have to have the "rotars" rescored or replaced, so don't hesitate to have them checked NOW, you could kill someone or be killed if I am correct. Good Luck

Return the car back to the dealer, it sounds like some of the brake hardware is broken or loose. Get it fixed before an accident occurs, or lawsuits will pile up.
good luck........

Your car is still under warranty, let the dealership fix it.

Sounds to me like your ABS is faulty, or loose. But don't rack your brain over that. Just get it to the dealership as soon as possible.
