i like a really nice guy but when i've told guys i like them in the past, we can't even be friends anymore. how do i drop the hints so that if he likes me back he can make a move???

Think first of yourself, if someone wanted to talk to you what did they do ? Just talk to him and let your emotions take over. First go to him in a private area, ask leading questions. If you and him have compatible ages it will make it easy for you to communicate. Remember to speak from your heart because the first impression is always the best impression. that's the one he will remember. Just lead him into telling you how he fills about you and be ready to answer any question that he may ask that might be in your favor.
If you don't handle this right it might take a long time for this moment to happen again. You may stand the Chance of losing him for-good ( THE 1 THAT GOT AWAY ).

It is perfectly ok for the lady to ask out the guy, it is just courteous to give him the opportunity first. You could suggest to him that you guys go see a movie together. When he asks "Like a date?" be honest, say yes. If, however, you are too chicken to ask him out on a date, try and spend time with him alone. Ask if he'd like to come over your house and study. When you are around him, wear makeup, relax, and otherwise just be yourself. Flirt with him, tease him about his manliness, but don't be insulting. For the most part though, I think your interest will come out naturally, provided you do interact with him socially on some kind of a regular basis, and you're honest with what you say and do.

Being subtle like that, and trying to tell him without saying it will lead you nowhere. Sure you have some chances of him noticing your small hints, but you know what the best way is? TALK TO HIM Seriously, if you can overcome your shyness (and the only way to do that is to practice, and what better way than the guy you like), then you stand a MUCH better chance in showing him that you like him.
