Hope fading for missing climbers on Mt. Hood

(Bayridge-WABC, December 19, 2006) - Hope of finding two missing climbers alive on Mt. Hood alive is now fading.
Rescue crews say the two missing men, including one from Brooklyn, may have been swept over a treacherous cliff by howling winds.

Recovery teams have now narrowing their search to a small, rugged section of a ridge and glacier on the mountain's north side.

Officials say it's too dangerous to send search teams on foot, so the rescue effort is largely aerial.

The spot on the 11,239-foot mountain where the two men vanished is known as "the gullies," with a 60-degree slope and a treacherous 2,500 drop-off.

Teams are expected to continue searching, but bad weather may force them to take a break on Wednesday.
