XII = 12 (the X is 10, and each I is one, it's just roman numerals.)
Like all Final Fantasy games, (except for the rare sequels like X-2 (sequel of X), and the sequels of VII), each has a stand alone story line. X-2 is about Yuna and Tidus.
XII (12) is not. It's a totally new storyline, and it is terrific!

There's FFX-2, which is a sequel to FFX which is what the first guy posted about.
FFXII (twelve) is totally different from Yuna and Tidus' story. It's set in the same place as Final Fantasy Tactics, a land called Ivalice. Two huge countries are at war, and a princess, called Ashe, is caught between the two warring countries because her kingdom lies between the two larger countries. It's also about a street urchin called Vaan who has dreams about becoming a sky pirate. He and his bestfriend, Penelo, wind up falling into a rebellion plot, involving the princess and some other characters. It's very political and plays out like a history lesson.
It's got a lot of elements from the Final Fantasy universe (like Moogles, chocobos, the names of swords, Cid, potions, etc), but I found that this one is more about the plot than about the characters (like FFX was). It's a brilliant game, though.
