In South Carolina. To be accurate: In Fort Sumter, South Carolina. In April 12, 1812...when Confederate forces besieged Fort Sumter which was held by a Union garrison. This started the Civil War (1861-1865).

In Charleston Harbor, South Carolina, on April 12, 1861, Students from The Citadel were among those firing the first shots of the war, though Edmund Ruffin is usually credited with firing the first shot. Fort Sumter was shelled by cannons.
