I know this may sound like a silly question...

What time of day does the daily high and low tempeature occur on average?

I realize that this varies from day to day, but at some point in the afternoon the high occurs (barring a cold or warm front moving in) and sometime at night the low occurs.

Precisely when do they occur on average?

My guess is about 3PM/3AM

Sunlight actually passes through air without heating it. But when sunlight hits the earth, the heat from the ground warms the air above it. The warmest part of day is usually around 3-5 PM, as the sun fades toward evening and the radiating process starts to overtake the sun's input. Generally speaking, the coldest part of day is right before the sun comes up, because during the night, the ground radiates the heat it's absorbed back into space, allowing the temperature to drop. It will continue to drop until the sun rises.

The high generally occurs a little before the sun begins to set since this is when the sun has had the most time to heat the Earth. (so generally between 2-5pm (depending on the season) The low is just the opposite, this occurs just before sunrise giving the Earth the most time to cool. (5-8am) depending on the season

The highest temperature occurs around 3-30 PM as the heating becomes more at 12 Noon(since the sun is nearer the earth at that time)and continues to heat till approximately 3.30 PM after which earth stars to radiate more heat than it receives. The lowest temperature occurs around 5.50 AM as the earth which is losing the heat throught the night starts getting the sun's rays as the sun rises after that time.Sometimes when there is heavy rain or snow early morning and continues till mid-day the minimum may occur even after 8.00 AM. Similarly maximum may occur even after 5.00 PM if rain or snow contnues throught the day and stops after 5.00PM .

Go to www.weatherperhour.com and plug in your zip code. You'll see the weather for your area each hour of the day. Generally, the high will be mid-afternoon and the low early morning, just before sunrise. BUT, that changes considerably on a short-term basis due to varying weather patterns (front coming through, cloud cover, etc.).
