First Apartment, Congratulations! For one, don't tell anyone in your building that this is your first. Don't make friends in the building, the less people know about you the better. Make sure that everything in the apartment works,is what is stated on the Lease, and have the Superintendent do a "walk-through" and have everything that you find, marked down and signed! Now don't go "Nuts" and have "wild parties" and "loud noises", there are "bi-laws", and you can be "Evicted" within your first month, if the neighbours complain, the Police will also get involved. Although you are now responsible for the rent, the maintenance, your food, transportation, phone, cable, etc, etc, Remember, pay ALL your bills on time, especially your Rent, and Utilities. DON'T let people start staying over, eating your food, and before you know it, they are "stealing" from you. Take good care of Yourself, LOCK-UP every time you come in and out. Don't ever leave your door unlocked, not for one-second. Good Luck, and a very merry Christmas.

Be sure you can afford it. Make sure you have good water pressure in the apartment. Ask the neighbors about the area. Read the lease beginning to end.
Remember, they want to get the apartment rented as much as you want to rent it. Don't let them push you around.
Try to get the rent lowered before agreeing to anything. I talked my landlord down 50 dollars a month before agreeing and that doesn't sound like much but I save 600 dollars a year.

I would suggest taking pictures on move in. Especially of anything that isn't in the best condition. Do a walk-through with the leasing agent, pay attention to what they write down, and don't sign it unless you agree with everything they've written. Remember that you are paying them to live there, so don't forget your rights.

Make sure you to a walk-thru at move-in.....open the stove.....make sure windows open/close/lock properly.....blinds bent or broken......doors secure.......think like you own it and see what is deficient......it's tedious and boring....but document and have the landlord sign as well.......stains/worn carpeting/holes in wall......odors?......run the dishwasher/shower/how long to get hot water......dishwasher sound like an army tank?.....all lights working/closet doors? Flush the toilet......refrigerator clean...cracked shelving, etc.

Remember, its not just a move in deposit.....phone deposit......gas/electric deposit....cable tv deposit.....cell phone costs...etc....

I would suggest spending the winter working a second job.....just to have that financial cushion and recoup all your move in costs as fast as possible.....

DON"T EVER PAY RENT W/OUT getting a receipt.....some places have little rent boxes (bad idea)......any requests, follow up in writing.

Most places require first and last month's rent to move in.
You will have a deposit to start most utilities. You'll have to call for the exact amounts for your area.
