Without a doubt. You are as good as dead if you get in the ocean during your menstrual cycle. I did it once....and lost a leg....i was really lucky.

That's an interesting question... you should always check out the waters first before you go swimming to make sure there haven't been any recent shark attacks. Also, use strong, heavy-duty tampons while swimming to avoid all leaking. If a shark smells the blood, I wish you good luck. However, the menstrual fluid is not 100% blood and it is diluted with many other substances, so I'm not sure if sharks can recognize this or not.

Speaking as a scuba-diver, I've heard it both ways. Some women divers have told me stories of being hassled by sharks while on their periods (though never attacked... I've never spoken to a shark attack victim, male or female). I've also heard that menstrual blood repels sharks. Frankly I doubt that it repels them, but I've dived while on my period (using a tampon) and never had a problem. Diving coaches have always warned a lot more about wearing sparkly or metallic items... sharks LOVE those.

The odds of being attacked by a shark, bleeding or not, are incredibly teensy. Sharks generally avoid areas where humans swim, and they don't WANT to eat us anyway (we aren't as delicious and nourishing as a seal or tuna). A lot of the time, they are curious about us, and only take a bite to see what we are, and then move on. Not that that's any consolation if your arm's off, or anything.

You shouldn't swim in waters where large sharks are common, and you should wear a tampon/Instead cup, if only not to wreck your bathing suit... but I don't think your odds of getting attacked are significantly increased by bleeding.

Why would you be swimming in an ocean with sharks??? That sounds like a death wish to me.

yes they can, and actually they can smell a drop of blood in a million gallons of water, not a millions drops of water, LOL

dolphins can also smell blood, as well as cervical mucus, and there have been cases of aggressive male dolphins actually raping human female swimmers who were ovulating at the time and only wearing a bikini. this is why they now recommend women to wear wetsuits when swimming with dolphins

I am a female who lives on the beach and as long as a tampon is used, you're fine. It's not that likely to be attacked. A friend of mine did get bit but it wasn't that bad.

Hadn't thought about that! That's a good question. I'm guessing that if you were freely flowing into the water they would be able to sense it, but I would think a tampon would keep everything kosher.

Put it this way...

A shark can smell a drop of blood in a million drops of water.

Don't swim in areas that are known to have sharks and perhaps you'll be fine.

Just be very careful.
