I am disabled and cannot drive. I pay most of my nills via bill pay on line...but I have times I need to mail my mail the old fashiond way. Have I been taking for granted that the mail person is supposed (I thought...) to pick up and deliver mail?
If this practice is still being used, (you know... like with the little red flag indicating outgoing mail) my mailbox is a small lockbox type deal, with about 40 others all around it,on the wall. We don't have any red flags, and I've tried to catch the mailperson, to no avale, because it nhot the same carrier everyday. Is there some sort of regulation requiring availabilty on the property, so we can mail our letters? As a homeowner,do I have some way to feel sure, say....that my Medical Insurance Premium is not stolen, but secure with the post person? and I will not lose coverage because of of a late payment? I'm really concerned about this. I have contacted the prop. mgmt. company and they said I should get someone to do it for me. HA!

Try and talk to him!

Those mail boxes you talk about have a single key for a carrier and he opens many from the top at the same time. He should take any mail then. Some places are putting a separate box for mail!

The protection of your mail is something your Property Management company should care about, but most leases never talk about what THEY are suppose to do!

I would suspect that securing mail which is a federal crime to tamper with is something that Code Enforcement, or even the post office might get involved with.

Moreover, you are probably fall under the umbrella of the American Disability Act and they may be violating federal law!

Secure or not secure, it's really not a good idea to put your outgoing mail in your mailbox these days. My last apartment complex (also townhomes) had a locking mailbox thing, including one for outgoing mail, and the management told everyone never to put bills or any important mail in it for security reasons. This was in an ordinary suburban neighborhood, not some inner-city war zone. Theft of mail is an increasing problem all over.

Your best bet is to find where the nearest collection box it--you know, the big blue mailboxes on the corner.

You can schedule a carrier pickup for packages, but not for regular mail. If the mailbox is right outside your door, you can try putting a note on it asking them to knock for outgoing mail. Otherwise keep an eye out the window to catch 'em.

You can only be as sure as the rest of us that the postal carrier is actually picking up and delivering your mail.

However, this has nothing to do with the type of box you have, nor does it have to do with you being a homeowner. It has to do with the fact that they are generally ethical employees, who know that stealing mail is a federal offense.

In fact, yours is probably more secure than what the rest of us have, as at least you can lock out the thugs & vandalists who have fun stealing things from mailboxes.

Yes, the practice of picking up and delivering mail is most certainly still being used...it's the only way any of us get anything posted.

Per the previous posts, check for an outgoing mail box. Otherwise, you should feel entirely comfortable that your mail is secure with postal employees.

Along with all those boxes for tenants should be one for outgoing mail. Otherwise, you can leave your outgoing mail in your mailbox and the carrier should take it. It might not hurt to put a neon sticky note on it in case the carrier might miss it.

Suggest to the management to install an outgoing mailbox if there is not one.

You might have some legal rights or something, but probably the best way to handle it is simply to call the local postmaster and ask for help. I bet they're willing to accomodate you. Are you sure that one of the boxes on the pedestal isn't for outgoing mail?

Mailmen/women still pick-up and deliver mail. If that isn't happening call the Post Office for your area and speak with a manager and tell him/her your situation.

No it is not against the regulation to scouse borrow from a private mailbox. as quickly as you drop it into an valid USPS mailbox, that's against the regulation to scouse borrow or tamper with the mail. yet as quickly as the postal provider places it on your mailbox, all that protection vanishes. it is why I even have a PO container.
