Well let's call the rate of tax r. So $50 times r is equal to $0.40. If you put that in algebraic form it is

50*r=0.40
r=0.40/50
r=0.008 or 0.8%

Total cost would be the cost plus tax so it's $50.40 in this example.

Let x = rate of tax
50 x = 0.40
x= 0.40/50= 0.008
So tax rate = 100(.008) =0.8% [Multiply rate *100 to get %]
Total Cost = 50 dollars + 40 cents = $50.40

Rate = 0.40/50 x 100% = 8%
Total cost = $50.40
What is $0.40 compared to $50? What fraction? What percent?

"Rate of tax" is basically the percentage of your net cost your tax is.

Your net cost is $50 and your tax is $0.40 so you need to know what percentage of $50 $0.40 is

50 * x/100 = 0.40
50x = 40
x = 40/50
x = 0.8

So rate of tax is 0.8%

Total cost is your net amount plus your tax

$50 + $0.40

Your total cost is $50.40

Divide the tax by the cost:
.40/50.0 = .008, or .8%
Tax rate = .8%, or .008
Total cost = cost + tax, or $50.40
