When you get to WeLa, you'll find many many many markets called Marketa's everywhere. Brush up on your Spanish for the best service at the deli counter. Other than that, you'll also find all the large chain grocers in or around your area. Ralphs, Food 4 Less, Albertsons, Vons, Jons, Vallarta, are just a few that come to mind on a moments notice! The bus drivers can tell you where evrerything is! Specialty shops are everywhere in this town. I've been here most of my life. The Jon's Market on Santa Monica Blvd (just off the 101 fwy & east of Western Ave) used to be a Vons, but it was converted to a specialty market with lots of ethnic foods from Armenian & Greek to Mexican & El Salvadorian! It's really quite a place to go exploring.

I have to put my vote in for Trader Joe's as well. Depending on the heighborhood you are moving into, many areas have small local stores; carnicerias (butcher shops), bakeries, ranch markets etc. that blow away the big chain stores. As nice and neat a store, I would avoid Gelson's. They are too expensive.

Post again when you get settled in and let us know more of an exact location. I'm sure people here would be happy to give more detail then. Good luck!!

Whole Foods is great! There is also Henry's and a couple of others. Whole Foods can be more expensive than Von's, Ralph's or Albertsons but sometimes you can't get they types of foods at the regular stores. I really like the deli and deserts at Whole Foods.

Ralph's Markets are very nice but the real treasure here is Trader Joe's and if you drink wine you are going to be floored by the prices - they are all great though because you don't have to pay transport so they are loads cheaper here - veggies and fish too! Also local ethnic markets here are so much nicer than you would believe and the variety is astounding. Welcome to LA!

I like Fodd for less but get your produce at albertsons it's a little bit more then other places but it's much fresher. If you need furniture get back to me that's my gig! Happy Holidays and have a good move. I'm from Boston you will love it out here especially if you like to sit in traffic

i just moved here from the east coast too. there is a ralph's near my apartment, and it turns out that it is identical to kroger, just with a different name. some of the generic foods even say kroger on them. i always liked kroger back east, so i'm happy.
