An Ultrasonic Cleaner with a mild detergent soap works best...

Most gold cleaners contain a mild abrasive and clean the gold by removing a small layer of the gold from the surface...Avoid those kinds of cleaners at any cost...

Best thing that I use is an "Ultrasonic" Denture cleaner that just holds water inside a little tray (about 3x4").

Just place any jewelry into the little tank and turn it on for about 10 minutes. There is no chemical reaction to any sort of jewelry, and it comes out sparkling clean and shiny. They cost around $15.

I empty the tray about once a week.

PS: I DON'T use dentures... Someone else told me of this great idea...

You can use toothpaste (the solid kind, not the gel) and an old toothbrush if it needs a scrubbing (like if there's dirt caught in it). Just remember to be gentle with the scrubbing motion. Then air dry and it should be as good as ... well, gold.

The best method is to go to a jewelers and have them clean and inspect your jewelry. The ultrasonic cleaning is fast, harmless, and generally done as a courtesy while you are shopping in their store.
