she did try to save them, in the that, she told them not to eat sweet things and that they would be dangeruos for their health.
so if you want to know that am right,you should listent to what the kids say,cause the kids said that ,their grand ma did warn them in directly. so pliz any one check it out in the movie and watch closely and tell me am right!

that is true the grandma told them not to eat sweet things-- i remember that movie!! i loved the book!

She said it was dangerous for their teeth. And even if that was a warning she still brought meals to them with cookies and donughts on the tray.

of course indirectly they were warned not to eat it.. she didn't Want to kill them, but she felt she had to "do away" with them in order to get remarried, and come into more wealth w/ the new man. so it's like, "hmm if they get poisoned and die, kind of good. but i might feel guilty, so i'll "warn" them not to eat it." it's almost like her motherly instinct (the little she had left) was fighting against her urge to get rid of the brats that were in her "way"
