I'm not sure why you even need to try to authenticate it. Just enjoy the gift.
If it IS a mock burberry, it must be a darned good imitation or you would be able to tell.

Burberry,Burberrys,the Equestrian Knight Device and the Burberry check are trade marks belonging to Burberry limited! Your gift should have a paper tag saying the above and a tag in it! How good is your friend to spend over $100 or euros to buy you such a gift?! You could also visit a Burberry boutique to see for yourself!

you can go to a store that sells it and ask. i did that once. also a lot of bags like that (coach) can be registered and have numbers on the tags on the inside.

It should have sometype of little tag or label attatched to it if its authentic. if it doesnt, its a knock-off.
