I'm thinking of getting one but the guy at the store said the discs only hold about 2 hrs of recording. I'm hoping to record a marathon on TV (9hrs-9 episodes) and I don't want to change the disc every 2 hrs. Also, when you access the recordings, are they like tapes where I'd have to fast forward to the episode I want? Any suggestions on the best kind of DVR would be appreciated too.

Yes you can just like vcr tapes. A normal dvd can hold about 2 hrs of high quality recording. You can also record up to 8 hrs on it but the quality will suffer. They can be FF or RW just like tapes. The best DVR is JVC, Pioneer or Toshiba. The Liteon recorder is not in the same class but they're not bad either and they will cost less.

They make Dual Layer DVDs that should do the trick or if you burn the video file not as a DVD you can put over 20 hours of MPGS and WMVs on there.
