An investment banker is typically involved in structuring financial transactions for businesses. For instance, investment bankers assist businesses in structuring debt or stock offerings. They also will find and introduce potential merger partners and will structure the merger. Investment bankers also do all forms of consulting regarding business financial transactions.

Although investment bankers may, at times, get involved in investing funds (as stated in another response to your question), investment of funds is usually only incidental to the primary financial transaction (e.g., debt or equity offerings, mergers, etc.).

Also, although an MBA might help put an individual in a position to eventually become an investment banker, investment bankers are typically VERY experienced financial experts with many years of experience.
