Basically, Goths wear black, with cheap and nasty jewellery, with thick coats of white make-up to go against societys conformity, which means to look different from the rest of us.

So why then do they all wear the same clothes! They've created their own society of losers all looking the same. Hypocrites. Why is this????

Ok well "basically" (oh how I hate that word) I wear many colours, black, white, green, blue purple and whatever else takes my fancy. I don't wear white make up because I have beautiful skin and see no reason to cover it. I don't "fight conformity" in fact as a well brought up, kind and intelligent girl, I don't fight much of anything, too busy enjoying my life to care what others think of me or anyone else. Nasty cheap jewellery? Some of my jewellery and clothes cost more than some cars I see on the road! I think you need to find out what a goth actually is, you might like to try reading, I've heard it's supposed to be good. So some of us look the same..never said I was unique did I? What about people who shop in Gap? They all wear the same clothes, are they losers too? Nobody will ever be unique style wise, everything's been done at one time or another. I like how I dress, my husband thinks I look sexy, my boss uses loads of my design ideas so I doubt your opinion will make me lose sleep. you on the other hand might lose some sleep when you're tossing and turning at night wishing you had your very own sexy gothic temptress in your bed...you know you want it!!

Younger (mostly teen) goths generally do conform to some degree, but the older ones are less uptight and have made a conscious decision to be that way because they enjoy it, not to fit in. :)

because, in its own sad way, it's just another attachment to conformity.

goths are more tolerant in their ideas compared to other groups no doubt, but they still bind together to identify each other to keep strong.

this same concept goes for ravers, although ravers tend to work in more sub-groups and while holding the same beliefs, dress varies differently, though not too differently

on the final lines of conformity is the suicide kids, which are people who honestly have no ties to conformity, they just do what they want, listen to what they want, dress how they want, and think how they want...

i feel i'm rambling on here, but i want the best answer blammit!!!

I don't know why but, I must say the few 'Goths' I have encountered (at restaurants, etc.) have seemed like nice people. So, if they're happy dressing and looking like that, well, let them be happy. Whether I understand it or not makes no difference.

I get what you're saying. But hey they're still their own little group off the rest. Now if that became "in" it would be interesting to see what they'd do. And you know what? They say they wear black because it's the absence of color but it's not white is the absence of color. You'd think they'd atleast do a little research before starting their own sub-group.

HEY!!! there is a big difference between a Goth and a "Goth". Piercings and black clothing is optional for a Goth. Goth is an extreme version of emo, where everyone hates everyone else. "Goth" is a fashion statement for insecure people.... and it sucks.

I was goth in college, I wasn't fighting anything, I just loved the look, the music, and the scene.

it's a rebel alliance
i think some people turn to this form of "nonconforming conformity" to make the statement that they are aware of the fact that they are not like the rest of society.
it helps them to identify others who feel the same way that they do

Their "conformity" is a lot smaller than the conformity that they're conforming against.

There's safety in numbers.
And comfort.
And perhaps they should just
form a little club.

First, I'd like to say that I really liked Towka's answer! ROFL!! I don't know--it sounds very weird & unusual to me--but, then I think that's what they're going for--all young ppl have their own cliques/styles...I think we've all gone thru some form of that in our lives.
