Because it suppose to mean that the spirit lives on, that is why people believe in ghosts.

Hi Glen may be this answer will be worth 10 points.
Albert Einstein (1879-1955), one of the greatest minds the world has known, he taught us that energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can only be changed from one form of energy into another form of energy. This means that no matter what is done, energy cannot be destroyed and most people accept this.
Human beings have both chemical and electrical energy in their bodies. They are organically designed to carry our electrically charged brain and nervous systems. When human beings die our chemical bodies begin to decompose. The organic side returns to wear it came from - energy changing into a different form of energy as Einstein's law says. So what happens to the electrical energy that flows through our brain? It can't simply disappear or fade away out of existence. That would break the laws of science. That energy has to still be somewhere only now it has changed into a different form of energy. What happens to the energy is really determined by personal faith. No one knows exactly what waits beyond this life. What we do know, thanks to science, is that the electrical pulse energy in each human being will always exist because as a rule it “cannot be destroyed.”
Thomas Edison, (1847-1931) was another famous inventor (he invented the light globe) Edison was a genius ahead of his time. He also invented the phonograph, typewriter, electric motor, stock ticker, and 1093 other patented inventions. One of the inventions that he worked on at the end of his career was a secret project, a machine that would let the living see and communicate with the souls of the dead.
Edison believed that that the soul was made up of what he referred to as “life units.” These microscopic particles or life units could rearrange into any form. They retained full memory, personality and were indestructible. Edison's machine would detect these life units in the environment and allow living individual to communicate with the dead. He put many years of hard work into his new creation, but sadly, he died before it was finished. Some called Edison crazy howevero others thought that he was onto something bigger than the idea of the light bulb. They believed that if he would have had a little more time, we might all today be living in a very different world.
It's been found that in almost every ghost haunting and poltergeist experience that there are certain electrical elements at work. Using EMF detectors ghost hunters can monitor these electrical forces. These devices can examine and record even the smallest fluctuation in the surrounding electromagnetic field. Everything gives off some kind of electromagnetic field, even our own bodies. Electrical appliances, like television sets and computers give off higher distortions than a lamp or a toaster would. When ghosts are present there are higher levels of electromagnetic distortions. Many times the distortions are so high that they interfere with the working abilities of computers systems and audio/video equipment. High levels of static electricity are also detectable.
Recording temperature changes is another scientific way of detecting the presence of ghosts. Fluctuations of more than 10 degrees have been recorded in small areas of rooms with constant temperatures. It's a scientific fact that there has to be some form of energy present to alter the temperature. Temperature does not change unless "something" is affecting it one way or the other. In many ghost sightings witnesses report feeling a cold spot. This could be caused by the fact that light does not seem to reflect correctly off of most ghosts, which also gives them a dark form. The light seems to be absorbed into the ghost. The theory is that ghosts absorb both light and heat energy causing the general area around that ghost to be several degrees cooler. There are also hot spots recorded, which could be just the reverse affect occurring. Instead of soaking up the light and heat the ghost is reflecting it back, causing the area to be warmer.
In conclusion Glen all stories about ghosts reflect specific instances. Ghost stories tend to shrink when attempts are made to capture the spirit using scientific methods. Ghosts do not appear regularly as the result of a specific causal relationship. There is no uncontradictible scientific research that indicates the existence of ghosts. Most people who don't believe in the spirit world htroughout the world believe that stories of ghosts can be explained by illusions, exaggeration or trickery of various kinds, though the stories themselves may well have a real purpose.
To show that something exists only really requires one single irrefutable example. But it is rather more difficult to prove that something definitely does not exist.
Have a wanderful Christmas Glen and if you are ever in Australia lets go ghost hunting sometime.

Maybe one day there will be a scientific explanation for ghosts. If time is relative, and if there are places where time can become warped, maybe we see "ghosts" because of tiny warps right here on Earth, and what we see is the past meeting our present. In the case of UFOs, maybe it's our future (the UFOs being our futuristic spacecrafts) meeting our present. Since time is relative-- making the past, present and future relative-- ghosts could be people from the past, living their lives, and we only see them very rarely where warps are located. Hey, if we're standing in the right place, maybe we're ghosts to other people right now.
I tend to be skeptical, too. But as science continues to advance, maybe things that seem crazy now might be explained logically someday. Maybe, as another answer suggests, we do have energy that continues. But I don't like to blindly believe in anything, either.

Hmmm. I would debate the notion that no scientific evidence exists.
Energy has no end. Spirit is energy. Might sound new-agey, but different energy patterns have been evidenced where there have been ghost sightings. Perhaps it's just a different way of viewing the issue but what does happen to the energy that is in physical human form when the body dies? Where does that energy go?

Alot of people uses ghosts and spirits to help them accept death, alot of people are scared whether they show it or not. Alot of it's to do with your subconscience, some people don't admit they believe in ghosts but when alone they say to themselves there is,to ressure them that death doesn't end when you leave your current life.
People also do it because there is no scientific evidence to prove that they are not real and because science can't explain what happens when you die. Alot of people believe they see ghosts but some believe it's just their subconscience creating a illusion normally to help them understand. But I guess we'll never know if they actually exsist or the believers do actually see anything at all.

People believe in ghosts, because they have had experiences that they cannot explain (and that is the definition of paranormal), or because they want to hope for an afterlife.
Some of the best evidence for the existence of ghosts is ghost stories, pictures, videos and evp. I recommend visiting Angels & Ghosts and exploring roughly 2000 pages of information. Perhaps, you might find something that answers your question regarding the existence of ghosts. Here is the url: http://www.angelsghosts.com

How does the fact that other people believe in ghosts affect you? So, why do you care? If they want to believe in ghosts, let them. Just like some people believe in God and some people don't. Sometimes it comforts people to know that there is something else out there. And comfort is very unscientific.

I think most people believe in Ghosts because of stories heard when they were children. Others may believe in them to have hope of seeing a perished loved one.

People believe in ghosts because they have probably seen one. I bet you believe in dogs & cats? Of course you do, you have seen them before. I have seen ghosts before therefore I believe in them. Its that simple. I am not deluded & I have eyes that work quite well.

Can't give you proof, but I've seen them & heard them. My daughter has, also. Some people are more sensitive to this than others. if you are aking from a religious standpoint, our brains are supposed to have 90% more than we're using now. Maybe some folks have a little bit of that "tuned in".
