I run both AVG and Spybot Search and Destroy; former is antivirus, the latter anti trojan/spyware. If you have a virus, the best thing to do is first google and identify which virus you have.
Download a specific fix for the virus you have (you can get them free from most antivirus vendors - you dont need to run their products to run their specific virus fixes). The reason you do this is because a lot of viruses once active will take actions to either hide themselves from specific antivirus products or try and disable as many antivirus products they can - may be one reason why you cant install Norton.
After cleaning, download antivirus/anti trojan program and then update the virus definitions first, even if youve only just downloaded the program. Then run a full system scan.

You need to run it in safe mode! And its a trojan so you need an anti spyware, an anti virus probbly won't fix it.
You may need to switch off System Restore as back up files will be hiding in there, and it will just restore itself. Go to Start - programs - accessories - system tools - system restore.
Run your anti virus and anti spyware in Safe Mode. To get into Safe Mode repeatedly press the F8 key after the bios screen loads but before Windows loads. You'll know if you made it because the screen will be at 800 x 600 and your pc will be slow.

You need to install one anti virus;
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ -AVG anti virus or
http://www.avast.com - Avast Antivirus

You need all three anti spyware programs;
http://www.ewido.net - AVG(Ewido) anti trojan.
http://www.lavasoft.com - Ad-Aware SE Personal anti adware
http://www.safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware. Use the Teatimer settings to protect Internet Explorer, and the Immuniser to stop malware getting on your pc.
Also use Microsoft Defender and their online scans.

Theres a full list of freeware on my blog.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

Ad-Aware is a free anti-virus I use frequently to remove annoying ads and stuff like that. It has a great interface to work with. Spybot Search and Destroy is also great because it immunized your system from viruses and it updates often. When you combine them the power is greater than McAfee AND Norton.

Personally, I like AOL AntiVirusShield. Don't let the name AOL scare you. AntiVirusShield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.

In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, AntiVirusShield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.

AOL AntiVirusShield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources. (6mb)

And it updates 15 to 20 times a day with new virus definitions, 7 days a week.

Free to anyone, AOL member or not from:
