Use a chain saw and cut it down.
Drill as many holes as you can in the stump and slowly pour broad leaf weed control into each hole.
It usually takes a year or two to completely kill the tree.
Keep the wood because it is GREAT for BBQ. In Texas, the only good thing about a mesquite is the wood to cook with.

If you like mushrooms you can get rope spawn for oyster mushrooms from Fungi Perfecti. You clear some bark at the base of the trunk and put the rope spawn around it tightly and it will grow oyster mushrooms on your tree while taking it out. The mushrooms are delicious and the website is pretty cool.

You can girdle the tree by taking a saw and cutting the bark all the way around the tree.

I guess the stuff they're saying might work, but I'd just get an arborist to take care of it right away. If you kill it, it might keel over in unpredictable ways. Plus, you've got a dead, ugly tree on the lawn for a year.
Anyway, your call...

If it's growing under the house, like out the side, but roots underneath, cut it down to the stump. Buy a product to kill the stump. 'Stump kill' is supposed to work real well. if you can get at the stump, pull it after it is dead. If you think it will damage the house, just leave it, it's dead.

Aww why do you have to kill the tree?
Get a tree guy to just come and chop it down it makes great firewood and they will also take out the stump.

If you get hold of some large copper nails, about 4 inches longs and drive them into the trunk, or drill some holes into the trunk on a downwood angle and fill the holes with poison.
