I'm 21 yrs old, I'm a fashion graduate and eventually want to start my own clothing line, which means saving up a lump sum to get me started. However, I also want to travel to NY next year for a couple of months which also requires saving up a lump sum.

My question is should I stay here in London and start working on my clothing line which could take anything up to 3 years to kick off properly or should I go travel first (whilst looking for inspiration) and then come back and tie myself down to the pressures of running your own business?

I'm so in 2 minds about this please offer advice and why you think I should do it that way?

Thanks

Love Hugs and Jelly Babies for all. x

Well, as you know, fashion changes pretty quickly so going to NYC for inspiration for a clothing line that won't get started until 3 years from now seems a little foolish.

There is a more DIY approach to what you want. Take it from the punks...we know all about DIY.

Are you making clothes now? What is stopping you from making a little website or myspace site promoting your clothing...kind of starting from the ground up. If you are any good...you will sell stuff. But it will take a while so just keep at it.
Make up business cards and go to events (band shows, art galleries, museums, new bar/eating establishments) and hand them out to EVERYONE. Create your own buzz...that's the only way to do it without causing a situation where you may fall on hard times with money.

I don't know how London works, but I imagine it is similar in the sense that Mom and Pop stores go out of business pretty quickly thanks to huge corporations killing them all...this is why it's important to start smaller...without a store front. And then take the plunge when you can afford to completely fail. I hope this info. helps.

I just got back from London and my perspective was that it is a trendy, hip and inspiring city. You're also a four hour Eurostar ride from Paris, and you should take that into consideration.

However, New York has an excitement all it's own and travel broadens the mind and inspires the spirit.

You should travel first. Come up with a unique product that you would pay big $$$ for if you saw it in a store. Then head back home, center yourself, and go to work.

I'd travel first and get more inspiration for your clothing line business, maybe you could write to some of the big fashion designers in New York and ask them if you could do a bit of work for them while your over there, you never know your luck.

Travel Now. When you are older then you can settle down and run your own business. Travelling will give you an insight into other cultures and other ideas instead of getting bogged down in what you now believe to be the only good thinking on the planet..yours. I speak from the experience of life.. at 21 I was going to retire at 40 and travel the world....at 39 I went bankrupt!!!

Do your travelling now and get ideas from other people. With maturity you will learn to pace yourself and hone your skills.

Good Luck!

That can be a toughie which can be resolved by looking at priorities.

Is starting the business more important than going to NY?

Yes? Focus on getting it off the ground
No? Go on the trip.

Did your studies burn you out to the point where you need to unwind before being ready to run it successfully?

Yes? Go on the trip.
No? Skip the trip.

Do you have concrete ideas for the business or do you need to find inspiration first?

Yes? Focus on getting it off the ground
No? Go on the trip.

I think if you ask yourself questions like these you will find your answer. Good luck in your ventures. ;)

Travel!!!!!! Go see the world, get some ideas. You are still young enough that if things dont work you still have time to change it. You cant do that when you are 50. Go meet people and get connections. Maybe in NY you can get a job in the fashion industry NYC and gain some knowledge! I say travel! :)

Jelly Babies, really? woo-hoo. I think at your age you should just follow your dreams and do your traveling now. As you get older times and life situations with a future family possibly will slow you down. Try and do what you are able to do now, and prayerfully the inspiration will flow!! Prayers and Merry Christmas!

Perhaps you could include some elements of learning or discovery in your NY trip, so that it is not disconnected form your future business venture. I would think making some contacts, gaining new ideas, talking to a few executives or designers in NY may help your fledgling business. Good luck.

You should start your career and start off your clothing line. Once you become rich and tired of being under pressure probably in you mid to late 40's you should relax a bit with the fortune you already have and spend the rest of your life traveling.

If you're young enough to be in a doubt then you're too young to commit to the business right now. Do the travel now cos once you get really busy you'd regret not doing it. And do it for fun as well as work.
