No. They have such a huge fat layer underneath their skin to protect them from the artic cold would make the heat of the island absolutely unbearable. They would literally cook inside their own skin. In zoos they can survive given the right enviroment. Their enclosures are kept cool, as is the water in these enclosures. Otherwise, the bears wouldn't last long in captivity probably.
Over time a species can adapt to climate changes, but the one you're talking about would be an immediate change.
Also, think about diet. What could a polar bear find to eat on a tropical island that would contain enough fat to fuel it's enormous body? Polar bear males weigh over 1,000 lbs. They mainly eat seals.

On an island just like the one in Lost yeah. But not on a tropical island in general no.

all animals on the planet are subject to evolution. the polar bear has evolved for millions of years to suit the polar ice caps. A tropical island would not be a suitable environment for its survival.
it would suffer for the various reasons;

its primary food source (i.e. seals) would no longer be available.

its physical appearance (i.e.being white) would no longer offer any camouflage, and thus its ability to hunt would be affected.

it would not have had a slow and a subtle change in temperature, and thus would not have had the chance to adapt. it would severly overheat, and would not be able to control it s core temperature.

cheers

I don't know. I love LOST but it's like.. anything can happen. A polar bear on an island, why not, right?

Poor bear would suffer horribly, as the fur (which is clear like fiber optics fibers) pipes the sunlight down to his black skin.

Dehydration and suffocating heat stroke would probably follow. If he were lucky enough to find a cool pool, the probability that tropical fungus, bacteria, insects and foods would do him in in pretty short order is very high.

He's just not made for that kind of place.

Best wishes!

That show is so wacky it is strange that they have not thought of putting a polar bear on that island, just to confuse them on the location

I don't know, but would it be something else to drop a polar bear in the antarctic and watch him gobble up penguins by the dozen?
