Its been 8 months and the Navy docs really haven't done much, im totally against getting cortisone and would like to seek prolotherapy, spinal decompression machine and or a chropractor. I fear that if the above choices don't work or the Navy won't point me in that direction that i will be medically discharged. If that is so will this discharge greatly effect me getting a job as a civilain, IE firefighting, cop, personal trainer
I have been sent in circles for the last 8 months only receiving electro stimulation pads and hot packs with some back stretchs and exercises. Hey at least you guys know your tax dollars aren't being spent on something useful!!!!
Any help you guys can dish out would be useful
thanks

well, veterans usually get "veterans preference" when applying for certain jobs. Also, if it happened on active duty you can apply of service-connected compensation. Usually this process can be started before you actually exit the military if you are exiting on a medical discharge. Just make sure all of your procedures are listed in the SMR's as well as a summary of the events surrounding the wreck, as in when, where, active duty or not.

For further information on what to do from here, you might want to call the US dept. of Veteran Affairs 1-800-827-1000. They will be able to give you some general information as to what will be available to you. You can also check on getting treatment from a VA Medical Center.

As far as affecting your search for a job, if you are able to cope with the physical requirements of the job, it shouldn't matter whether you were medically discharged or not.

traumatic back and neck pain are difficult to treat even under the best circumstances and takes years, not months to treat. From your comment, it appears that your Navy doctor is treating your injuries conservatively but appropriately. Cortisone injections into pain trigger points are a very effective treatment but not a cure. The Journal of the American Medical Association has absolutely nothing good to say regarding Prolotherapy (an injection of dextrose and lidocaine) and you will find very few physicians giving it (however you will find non traditional providers who do).
Chiropractors are very good at their trade and I do believe most large military hospitals have them on staff.
I would assume you've already started physical therapy so you may want to talk to your doctor about a pain management specialist. These are folks who can provide personalized pain treatment that work in conjunction with other therapy for a more holistic, safer treatment plan.

It's sorta up to you. If you want to get better, do precisely what the Navy docs tell you to do, do all the physical therapy as prescibed, if you're still in pain, keep going back to sick call. Eventually, they will either get you fixed up or discharge you. And yes, if you get a medical discharge, it will follow you. Keep in mind that YOU are not qualified to make a medical decision regarding yourself, unless you've been through med school.

If the treatments you're getting aren't working, then it's time to try something else. It's not the first time I've heard of 'medicine by committee'. Which, needless to say, is not going to work.

Do whatever you have to to get the treatments you need. And good luck. I'll be rooting for you.
