Go into the start menu and click on 'search'

so far so easy...

Click on which type of file you wish for it to search for (if you wish you can just select it to search for the file anywhere)

from there you can either insert the title or part of the file title, or in the box below you can have windows search within the file for a certain keyword...

from there click search and hopefully you'll find it.

from start bar, Start->Search->For Files or Folders
click on All files, if you dont know filename leave it blank or use wildcards e.g. look for everything ending in .doc use: *.doc, type text you want to search for in the 'a word or phrase in file' box and click on Search.
From experience I found the built in Windows Xp search facility to search text in files to be a bag of sh**te, even with indexing turned on. Download the free version of 'Agent Ransack' from http://www.mythicsoft/com/agentransack . Its a 1000 times better than win XP search and it actually works properly (unlike xp search . . .)
